Four Shades of Black
For Gavin Mulholland’s debut Four Shades of Black, I crafted a book that elevated martial‑arts publishing into the realm of art. Working with photographer ‘Richard Pullar’, I art‑directed a series of stark, disciplined images. The result was described as the most beautiful martial‑arts book ever produced, a ‘work of art’ in its own right that defined Mulholland’s arrival as a serious author in the discipline.

For Gavin Mulholland’s More Shades of Black, I evolved the original book’s gallery‑grade aesthetic into a sharper, updated colour version. Working again with photographer ‘Richard Pullar’, we kept the stark, disciplined imagery but refined the art direction, creating a seamless yet more contemporary continuation of the coffee‑table format.
